The Backstory

THE BACKSTORY

CHEERS LIVE ON STAGE is a rousing new theater comedy set in Boston’s iconic basement bar where WE know everybody’s name: Diane and Sam. Carla, Coach, Cliff… Norm!

Utilizing the original award winning television scripts skillfully adapted from the first season of NBC’s long-running sitcom, the stage production gives modern audiences the chance to experience live for the first time since its original taping, that rare sophisticated TV comedy that seamlessly combines slapstick comedy, romance and drama.

Based on the first season of Cheers, this production finds baseball player-turned-bar owner Sam “Mayday” Malone hiring newly jilted aspiring poet Diane Chambers to work in his pub, alongside perpetually confused old bartender Coach and tough-talking waitress Carla, who cracks wise with know-it-all mail carrier Cliff and perennial barstool-warmer Norm.

Cheers was the last, and perhaps greatest, of the pre-ironic golden age of sitcoms, “appointment television” with bona fide jokes and punch lines, pre-dating Seinfeld, Friends, andThe Office. At the time it concluded in 1993, the series held a record 117 Emmy nominations and 28 wins, earning nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series for each of its 11 seasons. Theater, television and film veteran Erik Forrest Jackson – acclaimed for his Off-Broadway comic adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie as well as Doll, a twisted take on Ibsen’s A Doll’s House – has expertly adapted the series’ original 1982 scripts for the stage. Award-winning director Matt Lenz (Pageant: The Musical; First National Tour of A Christmas Story: The Musical) fine-tunes CHEERS LIVE ON STAGE for today’s TV audiences accustomed to niche programming and binge-watching.

'Cheers' to this! Norm and gang going back to iconic bar

You know what's even better than going where everybody knows your name? Going back in time.

That's basically what a touring production of "Cheers" will allow fans of the classic sitcom to do, as it brings back elements of the beloved show's first season to the stage.

"I took season one of 'Cheers' and put it all into a big pot and cooked it up and boiled it down," writer Erik Forrest Jackson told the Associated Press. "The main through-line is the relationship between Sam and Diane but done in a way so it feels fresh."

Jackson used his binge-watching knowledge of the show to for "Cheers Live on Stage," and plans to get new laughs with the old characters — which will also include Norm, Cliff, Coach and Carla — but not the original actors. All new talent will take on the roles as the play hits the road.

The set of the play will be almost identical to the TV show, and producers plan to use the classic theme song as well.

First stop? Appropriately enough the show will kick off in tavern's home town of Boston in September.

The Play Where Everybody Knows Your Name: Cheers Live on Stage Is Coming

Sam and Diane are back – and they're touring across the country.

Fans of iconic TV series Cheers will get a chance to revisit their favorite characters with a brand new stage show.

Cheers Live on Stage is a two-act comedy, based on the patrons of one of Boston's most famous fictional bars. Drawing from the series' first season in 1982, the production will feature 14 actors and run for two hours, according to the Associated Press.

"I took season 1 of Cheers and put it all into a big pot and cooked it up and boiled it down," show writer Erik Forrest Jackson told the AP. "The main through-line is the relationship between Sam and Diane but done in a way so it feels fresh."

While none of the original stars, including Ted Danson and John Ratzenberger will appear in the touring production, fans will get their own chance at the spotlight.

Director Matt Lenz said that at least 10 preselected audience members will take the stage each night to portray bar patrons. They'll be outfitted in era-appropriate garb and given stage directions.

In addition, the set will be modeled after the TV show and the original show's theme music will be used, Lenz told the AP.

"It will ring bells and feel familiar when Carla talks about her crazy offspring, and Norm moans about not being able to get a job, and Cliff drops another one of his little known 'facts,' " writer Jackson said.

The show will open, fittingly, in Boston on September 13 and is contracted to tour through May 14, 2017, according to Playbill.

'Cheers' National Theater Tour to Debut in Boston

Cheers Live on Stage, an adaptation of the classic Eighties/Nineties sitcom, will appropriately launch its national tour in Boston this September. The comedy adaptation is built around memorable moments from the acclaimed show's first season, The Associated Press reports.

Writer Erik Forrest Jackson adapted the theater version after binge-watching all 22 Season One episodes nine times each. "The main through-line is the relationship between Sam and Diane but done in a way so it feels fresh," Jackson told the AP, referring to bar patron/former Boston Red Sox player Sam Malone and waitress Diane Chambers.
"It will ring bells and feel familiar when Carla talks about her crazy offspring, and Norm moans about not being able to get a job, and Cliff drops another one of his little known 'facts,'" the writer said.
The original Cheers aired for 11 seasons, from 1982 to 1993, winning 28 Emmys. The show's reputation hasn't dulled over the years: Last year, it topped Rolling Stone readers' 10 Best TV Shows of the 1980s poll, and the finale episode made our list as one of the best ever.
Initial plans for a stage revival emerged last year, though few details had emerged. The AP reports that the stage show will feature a cast of 14 actors, though no original cast members. In a unique twist, director Matt Lenz will recruit around 10 pre-selected audience members each night to participate onstage as bar patrons dressed in Eighties attire.

‘Cheers Live on Stage’ writer says show mirrors TV version

When Erik Forrest Jackson was asked to adapt “Cheers,” the iconic NBC sitcom, for the stage, he figured he should watch the show again. He hadn’t been a diehard fan during the show’s ’80s heyday.

So Jackson binge-watched the first season’s 22 episodes and was struck by how smart and funny it was. That made the task of writing ‘‘Cheers Live on Stage,’’ the two-hour theatrical treatment that kicks off a national tour at the Citi Shubert Theatre in September, both easy and difficult.

“I stayed very true to the original because it’s sacred text in comedy circles,” says Jackson. “But there were also ways it needed to be changed or tweaked so it plays in a live venue.”

“Cheers,” which starred Ted Danson as the former Red Sox pitcher and shameless scoundrel Sam Malone and Shelley Long as the pretty and imperious waitress Diane Chambers, was monumentally popular. Between its 1982 debut and the finale in 1993, it won 28 Emmy Awards and six Golden Globes.

Because Jackson’s adaptation is based on just the first season of “Cheers,” the cast of characters includes Sam, Diane, everybody’s favorite barflies Norm and Cliff, as well as Carla, and Coach. There’s no Woody, Frasier, or Rebecca.

“Essentially, the theatrical show mirrors the arc of the TV show, from when Sam and Diane meet to when they kiss, with all the fantastic stuff in between,” says Jackson, whose credits include a comic adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie” and a twisted take on Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House.” “We haven’t reinvented the wheel. It’s a brilliant wheel.”

The Boston engagement of “Cheers Live on Stage’’ is slated for Sept. 9-18 at the Shubert, followed by a multi-week run at the Broadway Playhouse in Chicago and then a tour across the country.

Jackson said he’s surprised — and grateful — that an adaptation of “Cheers” hadn’t been done already.

“I’m shocked, I have to say. It lends itself so beautifully to the stage,” he says. “The producers were smart to get wise to that.”

'Cheers Live on Stage' coming to Broadway Playhouse in Chicago

One of the most successful sitcoms of the 1980s is to be reborn: "Cheers Live on Stage" is headed to Chicago this fall.

The touring show, licensed by CBS and produced by Stageworks Media and Troika Entertainment, will showcase what its producers call "classic moments" from the series, which starred Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer and George Wendt, ran for 11 seasons, and was set in the kind of bar where everybody knows your name.

Or so it seemed, after a few beers.

Casting has yet to be announced, although it is unlikely any of the original stars will be involved, given the 25-year lag. CBS reportedly is developing several other retro sitcoms as live shows, based on the original scripts. There is a long history of mining teleplays for theatrical laughs — arguably beginning with "The Real Live Brady Bunch" at the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago.

"Cheers Live on Stage" will play in Chicago's Broadway Playhouse, 175 E. Chestnut St., from Sept. 20 to Oct. 23. Single tickets are not yet on sale; broadwayinchicago.com.
